OVERVIEW
The Radium Engineering FHST (fuel hanger surge tank) is the ultimate solution for fuel starvation issues. Fuel pump starvation is common when a vehicle is driven aggressively. Unstable fuel pressure resulting in a lean fuel mixture can cause engine damage. A stand-alone surge tank is an excellent device for eliminating fuel starvation, but installation can be complex. The FHST is a fully functional fuel surge tank contained inside the OEM fuel tank. It can be configured with 1, 2, or 3 high pressure pumps to feed fuel to the engine and 1 lift pump to keep the surge tank full. This system can meet the fuel demands of any engine power level.
Even with all of the extra fuel pumps, the FHST system is very straight forward and relatively simple to install. No grinding, bending, or modification of the vehicle is required. Furthermore, the system is compatible with all alternative fuels such as E85.

FUEL SURGE TANK
The surge tank system works by keeping fuel trapped around the pump (or pumps) that feed the engine. This ensures that fuel starvation will not occur and the supply of fuel to the engine will remain steady under all driving conditions.
What keeps the surge tank full? The FST pump(s) are supplied with fuel from 3 different sources: the high flow (low pressure) lift pump, the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) return, and the two integrated 1-way fill valves. All of these work together to keep the surge tank full of fuel at all times.

A stainless steel collector box (below) is provided that secures to the fuel tank floor. The sensors and lift pump attach to this box assembly. The collector box features a 1-way trap door to control slosh and prevent lift pump starvation.

The lift pump sends fuel into the bottom of the surge tank through an SAE quick connect ftting (below) which makes assembly easy. Also shown are the two one-way flapper valves that let fuel in but not out.
Once the surge tank is full, excess fuel overflows back into the main tank.

PLUMBING
The preinstalled barb fittings permit direct connections to the factory fuel hoses. No extra fuel plumbing is required.

Additionally, 8AN (feed) and 6AN (return) adapter fittings are provided for connecting aftermarket -AN style hoses. The fitting ports are machined low enough to clear the unibody sheet metal.

FUEL PUMP INFORMATION
All kits come partially assembled with the final assembly performed by the technician during installation. There will be enough parts to run 1, 2, or 3 surge tank pumps and 1 lift pump. Fuel pumps are sold separately. Refer to the install instruction link above for more details.

This system supports the following fuel pumps (make sure the correct hanger version is selected to match the pumps used):
Walbro F90000267 E85
Walbro F90000274 E85
Walbro F90000285 E85
Walbro GSS342 255lph
AEM 50-1200 E85
Ti BKS1001 E5LM (brushless)

A popular fuel pump strategy is to use both brushed and brushless pumps (E5LM) together as depicted below. In this case, the most cost effective solution is to purchase the following:
P/N: 20-0741-00 (shown above), Qty: 1
P/N: Ti Automotive BKS1001, Qty: 1 or 2 depending on how many brushless pumps will be used.
P/N: 14-0543, Qty: 1 or 2 depending on how many Ti Automotive E5LM brushless pumps will be used.
P/N: Walbro F90000274 or Walbro GSS342 or AEM 50-1200, Qty: 1 or 2 depending on how many brushed pumps will be used in the surge tank.
P/N: Walbro F90000295, Qty: 1 for the lift pump.
P/N: 14-0143, Qty: 2 or 3 depending on how many Walbro GSS342 or F90000274 or F90000295 pumps will be used. These are NOT needed for AEM 50-1200 pumps.
P/N: 14-0291, Qty: 0 or 1 or 2 depending on how many Walbro GSS342 or AEM 50-1200 pumps will be used.
P/N: 14-0691, Qty: 0 or 1 or 2 depending on how many Walbro F90000274 will be used.

P/N: 17-0051-00, Qty: 1 or 2 depending on how many Walbro GSS342 or AEM 50-1200 pumps will be used.
P/N: 17-0049-00, Qty: 1 or 2 depending on how many Walbro F90000274 pumps will be used.

ELECTRICAL

Bulkheads:
The custom designed stainless steel electrical studs easily handle the high current demand that compact multi-pin bulkhead connectors lack. These serviceable connections are hermetically sealed and impervious to all standard and exotic fuels. Non-conductive anodized aluminum acorn nuts are provided to prevent any accidental short circuiting. Enough studs are built in the top hat to accomodate the lift pump as well as 3 surge pumps (including brushless).

External Wiring:
Because the fuel "lift" pump supplying the FHST (in the original pump location) will now operate at very low pressure (high flow), the OEM external fuel pump wiring will be sufficient for the lift pump.
High current fuel pump wiring is provided for installing one FHST pump (1 relay, 1 fuse, and all associated wiring and hardware). NOTE: To wire in additional FHST pumps, extra fuses and relays are required. Consider purchasing Radium 17-0031 DIY Wiring Kit HERE for each additional pump.

Sensors:
The factory fuel level sensor is integrated into the OEM sender so a replacement fuel level sensor is provided. This new OEM Nissan sensor has the correct resistance range to work the gauge cluster properly. The original low fuel switch is reused.

Chemical Compatibility:
All in-tank wiring is insulated with chemically resistant ETFE. Electrical hardware is included for the fuel pump(s) and sensors.

FUEL HANGER PLUMBING KIT

20-0703-0X FUEL HANGER PLUMBING KIT, EARLY NISSAN
These plumbing kits include everything required to plumb the fuel system between the Radium FHST and the fuel rail. This kit is NOT designed for the stock fuel rail.

The kit includes -8AN (1/2") feed hose that runs from the fuel pump hanger through the provided fuel filter. A -8AN 90 degree PuskLok hose end is included for connecting to an -8AN male aftermarket fuel rail fitting (not included). A -6AN (3/8") fuel hose runs from the FPR (not included) to the fuel pump hanger return port. A -6AN 90 degree PuskLok hose end is included for connecting to an -6AN male aftermarket FPR fitting (not included). The fuel lines run though billet aluminum fuel brake line retainers. For HICAS retainers go HERE. The fuel lines clear the OEM fuel pump cover and do not require any cutting or drilling to get them past the fuel tank. The feed and/or return hose can be easily modified for installation of an in-line flex fuel sensor.

The included Radium Engineering fuel filter mounts in the stock filter location using a specifically designed Nissan bolt-on billet mount.

Depending on the kit selected (-03,-05), the fuel filter will be assembled with a choice of different elements. Go HERE for more filter element information.
